an unkempt broad.: Hoboken History →

uncannie:

I’ve been living in Hoboken for about 18 months now and I’ve learned a whole lot of history in this adorable 1 square mile:

  • Home of Frank Sinatra, Dorothy Gibson, Dorothea Lange, and Joe Pantoliano
  • Where the first recorded baseball game took place in 1846
  • Rated #1 by Forbes as America’s Top Public Transportation City
  • Sybil’s Cave was used in an Edgar Allan Poe story and its legends have inspired stories for more than 100 years
  • Birthplace of the Oreo cookie
  • Where Maxwell House and Lipton Tea blossomed
  • Steven’s is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States
  • The Hoboken Fire Department has been a Class 1 rated fire department since 1996 and is the only one of its kind in New Jersey and one of only 24 in the United States. The firehouses and the fire museum, are on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Most bars per square mile in America
  • Birthplace of the ice cream cone (only 4 doors away from our apartment!)
  • Home of the “teamster sandwich” from 30 Rock and some of the best hand-pulled mozzarella in the country
  • The first brewery in America was in Hoboken on Castle Point in 1663
  • Thomas Edison drove the first electric train in 1930 on the Lackawanna Railroad from Hoboken to Montclair, NJ
  • It’s where the zipper was invented
  • Two of the 10 Russian spies found in 2010 used to live in Hoboken
  • The 1954 Marlon Brando film, On the Waterfront, was filmed in Hoboken. The film was based on true stories, written by the reporter Malcolm Johnson, about murders and extortion on the New York waterfront. It won eight Academy Awards
  • It has his own food tours called “Mangia Hoboken!”
  • It hosts an annual Flip Cup tournament
  • TheMacy’s Parade Studio, which houses floats for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, has been in northwest Hoboken since 1968, but was relocated last year
